Matt Wearne – A Timeless Wine Label

The Williams family purchased Montague Estate, a boutique winery in northern Margaret River, in late 2020. The estate not only holds to the region’s historic and classic maritime wine lineage but also seeks to add a more modern ‘twist’ to the wines it crafts. This project was a seamless co-lab between designer, client and printer. With the client coming into the project knowing they wanted their heraldry (a griffin) on the label. The real challenge was using this to evoke a sense of timelessness, without feeling old or dated. To basically honour the past and yet still feel fresh.

Colour was instrumental in achieving this. With printed and foil colours complimenting the different bottle and wine varieties. Peacock Bros. digitally printed the labels on an HP Indigo Digital press. The combination foiling was done as a separate process using sculptured dies. Several die sets from different suppliers were tested to ensure the best results.

Wausau Bright White Felt was selected for the label stock due to its texture and weight, which helped facilitate the heavy emboss, resulting in an extremely high level of transfer detail. The result is a perfect synergy between design, material selection and printing. All of which ensures the final product embodies the estate’s essence.
