GRi.D Communications (Canberra) – The Tactility of Paper

Part of the Picturing Politics book series, “I am a New Woman” celebrates twelve remarkable women who campaigned for a more inclusive democracy in Australia. The book is narrated through a collection of reproduced screen prints by Parliament House artist-in-residence, Alison Alder. And accompanied by the stories of those women and the artworks.

The book was designed by GRi.D Communications and printed by Ellikon Fine Printers. Both companies consulted on the best approach to reproduce the artist’s work in a commercially mass-produced format.

A key production consideration was stock selection, as this could help the reader appreciate the tactility of the original artworks. They selected Knight Vellum for its ability to hold fine detail while maintaining a natural, uncoated texture. Multiple mock-ups were created, allowing stakeholders to assess weights by touch and feel, which ultimately determined the final grammage. The result was a well-resolved production. The client was absolutely delighted with the final outcome.
