Our annual Student Design Contest, Seasons in Type, yielded another fab crop of entries – Here are the winners…
The annual BJ Ball/Ball & Doggett Student Design Contest for 2023 followed the same format as in previous years.
Two calendars were produced—one for Australia printed by Special T Print in Sydney, and a New Zealand version printed by Centurion in Auckland. Both featured winners from their respective countries as well as a selection of ‘best of the best’ trans-Tasman winners that appeared in both.
The Brief
The contest brief was simple—create a colour palette for one of the four Seasons, come up with a name for this; then develop a visual expression using type, graphics and/or photography. Students were also required to match their design to a paper stock from a provided swatch of samples.
The Judges
The judging team for 2023 comprised some industry heavy hitters:
From New Zealand; Angelique Sparnaay-Martin from Consult Ongee, Mike Tindall from Insight Creative, Mark Spurgeon from Studio Publica.
Representing Australia was; Lindsay Tucker, National President of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA), Dave Lawson, founder of Design People, and Emilio Roccioletti, founder of ERD.
Judging was based on the work’s aesthetic appeal, suitability for offset print, and the appropriateness of the choice of paper stock.
Winners received a gift card and more importantly—gained bragging rights …just look at those grins!
